I think the easiest solution is to employ one HM-LC-Sw1-PCB for each thermostat. The boiler will be activated when at least one of the switches is "ON" and will stop when all switches are "OFF".
If you want to experiment a lot with the CCU and expect it to break, I think the most logical thing to do is buy a second CCU for experimenting purposes.

As for the direct connection, I don't think it is possible to connect more than two devices in a 'direct connection', is it?

If you create groups than you can create many direct connections - not only two devices.
