NewUser - needs some advice what to purchase next

Beitrag von papperone » 15.12.2018, 10:45

Hello, I'm a new user of Homematic IP solution, I live in Italy and after many research I decide to order some devices to start to play with them in my house and so far I'm quite happy but I'm not sure I understood what shoudl be next step and what exactly needs to be purchased.
My house is 3 floors, I've 12 rediators and a Gas boiler which provide both hot water for dometic usage and, with circulation pump, hot water for heating.
I was using just boiler thermostat to turn it on/off based on time, but I was alwasy having unheaven temperature acrosso all floors and even rooms in the same floor as the thermostat is the only place where temperature is read to decide if boiler must circulate or not the hot water.
I replaced the actuators of one floor with Homematic IP ones (4 x HMIP-eTRV) installed a lan gateway (HMIP-HAP) and a wall temp/hum reader (HmIP-STH) as 2 of the 4 radiators are in the same room I thought I could have this device to provide them the reading to control temperature.
So far all it seems to work but I feel the app is very simple and not providing enough info (e.g. I cannot see the reading of the actuators temperature and I cannot know if they are close, open and eventually how much open).
Looking on google I landed on this forum, I am reading a lot but I can't read German and this looks like a limit to better understand what I need to do next :(
This is what I learned so far, but I woudl apreciate some guidance before buying more deviced/hardware to complete my setup:
- I first looked at CC3 but then I understood a RaspberryPi + piVCCU/RaspberryMatic can replace it 100%
- I am quite experience with Raspberrys (I do have few running other devices in my home) so I woudl like to go this direction
- Despite the RaspberryPI itself, shoudl I buy mandatory a RF device and remove the current HMIP-HAP?
- Isn't possible to use both in order to have better coverage of the house as it's quite big and on 3 floors?
- Once I replace all manual actuator with HMIP-eTRV I would like to remove the old thermostat and control the boiuler circulation with Homematic IP system but I cannot find enough info
- My boiler needs a "dry contact" that when closed activate circulation for heating and when open not, can I use HmIP-PCBS and with RaspberryMatic control the boiler based on actuators status (e.g. simple rule like --> when at least one of the actuators open turn-on HmIP-PCBS and when all actuators are closed turn-off HmIP-PCBS?)
- As I'm using a lot NodeRed to control many "things" in my house, is there any way to integrate the HomematiIP system in NodeRED? If yes where can I find more info/resources?

Thanks to everyone that will be able to help or at least drive me to the right direction as I'd like to buy all I need as soon as possible and start the setup of converting whole house heating system :)

To get close look on how your system behave I would reccomend buying app Pocket Control HM HD. See how it looks on iPad in similar setup with yours and I did not, yet, gone to adding 3D emulation of home ;) Not sure, though, if it will run with Raspberry, better to check.

I may also reccomend going through my”blog” viewtopic.php?f=49&t=46514 where I decided to write details on my path to Homematic :D

Indeed I've read your thread just now, I think your setup in based on HM and not HMIP, am I correct?
Unfortunately I don't use any apple devices so I wont' be able to use that app which run only on iOs ...
I am reading that RaspberryMatic shoudl give me all the features I need (including NodeRed integration), but I'm really not sure if I need to trash the old gateway (and this is not nice being brand new) or, and this woudl be great, use both of them in my house so to have better RF coverage...
I really hope someone will be able to help as the forum is really 99% German and it's very complicated to followup thread with translator (at least for me!)

First HMIP-HAP better to call it HmIP Access Point - not gateway ;-)
You can not use both - only one god - HmIP-HAP or CCU

Papperone please read here first - it should answer 80% of your questions

Homematic IP User Guide PDF English

Homematic IP devices that you can not reach good - you can use up till now Homematic IP Switching Plug Socket (HMIP-PSM and HMIP-PS) as a repeater for Homematic IP devices - teach them in and set routing as active.

When you buy HmIP-WTH-2 per room and connect it to you radiators you will see the actual temperature and humidity in your room.

As you use until now the HMIP-HAP and not a CCU or RaspberryMatic Node Red directly is not possible,
What you can do install Home Assistant on an RaspberryPi - connect HMIP-HAP with Home Assistant:

Home Assistant you can do Node Red:

Hi Tomi:cc16, thanks!
I have already read that thread and still some of my questions are not asnwered:
- I already decided I would rather go for RaspberryMatic
- I understood it's mandatory to buy adn RF hat for Raspberry to be able to use it and as I don't have any I need to order one.. Any advice on which one?
- I can't find information if I can still use current gateway (HMIP-HAP) with RaspberryMatic or when I install RaspberryMatic I will need to remove it ?
- Thanks for the link, I am looking into HA integration as I've already an HA server at home, I hope I will be able to understand as audio is in German :(

You can not use both - only one god - HmIP-HAP or CCU/RaspberryMatic

Both RF modules (old vs new) work good the new one more expensive and I guess only for Raspi3B and 3B+
+ Wireless Homematic Module (HM-MOD-RPI-PCB): - can also be used as LAN Gateway for HM protocol
https://www.elv.de/homematic-funkmodul- ... usatz.html
+++New Wireless Homematic Module (RPI-RF-MOD) / out since Q2 2018 +++
https://www.elv.de/homematic-funk-modul ... usatz.html

When you buy HmIP-WTH-2 per room and connect it to you radiators you will see the actual temperature and humidity in your room in the HomematicIP App.

If you will go with CCU / RaspberryMatic here the documentation:

For a sake of self education I’m using both with CCU3.
For Android, check out this http://homenow.at/ but, yes, wall thermostat is a good item to have :P
And few more to give a try:

But Sergio - HomeNow is for CCU / RaspberryMatic not for his HmIP-HAP Access Point.

Further Good Android Apps for CCU / RaspberryMatic :
• TinyMatic
• Home24

@papperone
When you will buy a CCU3 / RaspberryMatic you can install RedMatic as an Addon to do Node-Red directly on the CCU.
https://redmatic.de/doku/RedMatic/01_installation.html - use google chrome to translate to EN

update:

I enabled HomematicIP services in my Home Assistant setup, while at first look it seems to work I've to say I'm disappointed by the update of the valve status. Values showed by Home Assistant are not reliable:
- I've valves that reported 0% whole day (so they should have been closed) but in reality they were opened as the relevant radiator was "hot"
- Even when valve closes the value reported in Home Assistant is still there for even up to 2hours

My feeling is that this service is unreliable and many status change of the radiator valves are not captured.
Is there something I can do to improve this or I am forced to go to RasperryMatic?
Will RaspberryMatic fix this in order to have reliable update as close as to real-time possible of all HMIP devices?
With RaspberryMatic will I be able to sedn out to Home Assistant all status changes (maybe via MQTT or other communication protocol)?

Well because Access Point HmIP-HAP Rest-API is not official, Home Assistant is using what was sniffed, traced and documented here by fans:
https://github.com/coreGreenberet/homem ... README.rst

You have several options you can create an issue in github for the Rest-API and a second issue in home assistant here:
https://github.com/home-assistant/home-assistant/issues
Hopefully it will help.

I can not answer you if this is normal because I use CCU not HmIP AP - here the valve status is always up to date when I check in @Home App. The biggest difference to HMIP-HAP Access Point, the CCU / RaspberryMatic is local gateway, API is officially documented so Home Assistant or IoBroker (what I use) is polling internal in my network thru official API.
HmIP data is in the cloud - so Home Assistant polls from the cloud, not sure how often data is read from there.

For hardware what I can say if valve shows 0% for my radiators they are really closed and no heat is coming. But this only works if hardware installation is correctly done, some people put 2 or 5 cent inside the radiator so the stick is longer and closes better heater. So maybe software is ok but hardware needs adjustment also?

What you can also do in Home Assistant is create a chart temperature vs valve setting to see if it differs.
